From 1991 through 2002 I wrote and drew two graphic novels, as well as several comics stories published in various collections and anthologies.

Graphic Novels

  • Frederick & Eloise

Written and drawn in Paris in 1991. Published by Fantagraphics in 1993. Heavily inspired by Edward Gorey, Jacques Trade, and the Coen Brothers.

    My first published work.

  • Dear Julia,

First published as four comics from 1995-98. Collected as a graphic novel by Top Shelf in 2000.

Also published in French by Canadian publisher Editions du Pasteque.

    Also two short films.

(Also, while I can’t prove this, I think it had something to do with that Oscar-winning film, Birdman. The ending, it’s just too uncanny.)

Mini Comix

  • Interim

Interim was made in late 1997, right after I completed Dear Julia, and right when I had no idea what I was going to do next. I was heading to Portugal for a comics festival and I wanted to take something with me that would fit the mood that I was in. I also wanted it to be understood in any language, so it’s wordless.

Interim is a series of fifteen drawings of the things around me at the time. There are some images of the interior of my apartment, my street outside, and other scenes from around San Francisco in September 1997.

The cover is printed in two colors on nice card-stock, and the interior is photocopied, and it’s 5.5 x 4 inches. I think I still have a bunch of these, so if you want one. pony up seven bucks and shoot me an email.

  • Nineteen Weird Guys and a Portrait of the Artist

I made my first little mini-comic for the Chicago Comic Con in 1997. Most of the comics folk I knew started with the minis and eventually graduated to “real” comics. I kind of went the other way.

At the time I was working hard on completing Dear Julia, so I went through several of my sketchbooks and picked out some of my favorite drawings of, well, weird guys.

The book is about 3.5 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide. If you want one they’re $5.00.
